Work On Your Wardrobe FITness

As I was getting dressed recently, I felt a little pick-me-up that started me thinking about how our clothes impact how we feel as much as how we look. Whether it’s something comfy to lounge around in, something sexy to wear to bed, or even something special for a night out, the things we wear both create and reflect our moods.

I am a firm believer that when it comes to workout clothes, comfort is key. If you put on something form-fitting and skin-baring and feel powerful, awesome! But if you feel confined and exposed, maybe loose and warm is the right style for you. It’s about knowing what makes you feel good.

This is true of everything in our closets. Once we understand how to choose clothing that helps us create balance, direct attention, and boost our confidence, we can begin to edit and expand our choices with intention.

Fit Over Size

Ignore the label, and feel the fit. Clothing that is too tight can create bulges that are uncomfortable and unflattering. On the other end of the spectrum, clothing that is too large can sometimes swallow your curves and make you appear shapeless.

Pull Focus

Think about your favorite features, and then highlight them. Color, pattern, texture, and details can draw attention to your best assets. Keep other elements simpler to create visual balance.

Play With Proportion

Visually adjust proportions by changing where lines and shapes fall. Use structure, like a fitted jacket or well-placed belt, to define your shape and create clean lines. If you have a longer torso, higher-rise waists can help create balance. If you have a shorter torso, lower-rise waists and longer tops may create more visual length.

Get Vertical

Move beyond stripes and think about lines. Open cardigans, straight-leg pants, and long necklaces, naturally draw the eye up and down, creating a longer, leaner silhouette. (Monochromatic outfits can create a similar uninterrupted visual line.)

Experiment

Remember, there is no “perfect” body. These tricks aren’t rules. They’re tools. Next time you go shopping, try something new. Play with options you normally wouldn’t consider. Keep what makes you feel good. Put back what doesn’t.
