This quote sent me into a deep dive about self-reflection. What do you see when you look in the mirror? What are you portraying to other people in this social media craze? Are you who you say you are? Do you like what you see when u look in the mirror? What are you really looking at? Is your sense of self accurate and inspiring? How many mind games is your inner dialogue playing with you, forcing you to become a photo editor/filter master? On the other side of self-reflection is the possibility to change your perception.
I started an exercise several years ago as I began transitioning out of my marriage and I continue to do it daily. I want to share it with you because I believe in the power of self-mantras and the power of tangible ideas with imagination. When you begin to put pen to paper, or in this case sharpie to glass, your thoughts take flight. This my self-reflection mirror. I write down words of inspiration on my vanity mirror. I pull from literature or lyrics from a song, or even poetry. I capture words of wisdom from cherished friends and also thoughts that come to me during meditation. I use a sharpie to write them down on my mirror.
Don’t worry, at any given time you can wipe it off with nail polish remover or alcohol! You can also wipe away the sentiments that no longer speak to you and replace them with new daily motivation. I write down my personal feel-good reminders, goals, wishes, dreams and pivotal moments. It could be singular words or thoughts. Life lessons are personal and imperative for growth. Now, what I see when I look in the mirror are positive and transformative daily reminders, instead of my hair that needs color, or my wrinkles that no one else is really focusing on, or how tired my eyes look from the demands of raising a family.
Instead of vanity, I’m looking much deeper. I see the reflection of my life’s wishes and dreams. You’re more likely to listen to your inner voice when you begin to write things down. Somehow, they feel more real. When you remind yourself of the things that are important, sooner rather than later they will be so loud that you cannot ignore them. Self-reminders will keep you on track. What if, when you looked in the mirror you not only saw yourself, but also your reflection in the form of words of wisdom? What if this is the first step to designing the life that you want? When I look in the mirror it goes far beyond vanity. Instead of seeing myself, I see the beautiful reflection of my life potential.
