Brooke Burke’s Top 5 Tips to Stay Healthy & Motivated During the Holidays

It can be particularly challenging to stay on track with your health and fitness goals during the holidays. There are just so many distractions and temptations that can get in the way and we have a tendency to sacrifice our own needs first. Our kids are home from school. Our family and friends are visiting or we are visiting them. The shopping and cooking never seems to end. It all adds up. And the holiday food options are often out of our control. I completely get it!

But I want you to know that I am here for you. In fact, the whole Brooke Burke Body community is here for you! I just want you to be here for you, too!

They say that where there is a will, there is a way. Well, I would like to take that one step further. Where there is a plan, there is a way! That is why I thought it might help if I shared my top 5 tips to stay healthy and motivated during the holidays. I know that with a little mindfulness, we can make it through the holidays without having to sacrifice or sabotage our goals in the process.

Find Real Balance

A good way to start is by organizing our time to prioritize what really matters and let go of what doesn’t. That means sharing some of the holiday responsibilities with family and friends, so that we don’t have to do it all by ourselves – even if we can! It also means practicing the fine art of saying “no.” Overcommitting ourselves is a recipe for disaster. I absolutely recommend practicing a few go-to responses for politely declining an invitation or request in a way that feels comfortable.

Put Yourself On The Schedule

There is no doubt that everyone and everything seems to pull us in different directions this time of year. And the truth is that it is pretty difficult to pull it all together if we don’t take time to pull ourselves together first. We all need a little “Me Time.” It doesn’t have to be a long time, but it does need to be our time. A short mindful meditation in the morning to reset and reconnect or a bite-sized burn while everyone else is having breakfast can make a positive difference that can keep you motivated all day long.

Rest To Be Your Best

It’s tempting to find extra time by losing precious sleep, but the short-term reward is definitely short-sighted. Our bodies and minds need adequate sleep in order to provide us with the energy and focus we need during the day. Whether or not they’re familiar with the Geneva Convention, any new parent can confirm that sleep deprivation is a form of torture. Without it, we just can’t be our most effective and efficient selves. When the going gets tough, the tough need to be well-rested.

Plan For Success

When time is short and so many variables are inevitably out of our control, it helps to make sure we have lots of options. Perhaps that looks like ensuring there are healthy options for every course when we are entertaining. Maybe it means eating before we go to a party to minimize the likelihood of overindulging. It definitely includes stocking up and prepping to have healthy shakes, snacks, and meals at our fingertips. That way we can eat responsibly at home and navigate celebratory occasions more conscientiously.

Start Now – Keep Going

Obviously, a new year is a terrific time to commit to health, fitness, and self-care. But right now is an even better one. If we think of time as the story of our lives, the next chapter may be absolutely amazing, but this paragraph isn’t finished yet. We can start making our dreams come true before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. Waiting another month just delays our beautiful possibilities. If we forget our mindful meditation today, we can remember tomorrow. If we overindulge at a get-together today, we can make healthier choices tomorrow. If we miss our workout today, we can prioritize it tomorrow before anything else can get in the way.

I hope my top 5 tips for staying healthy and motivated during the holidays help you stay strong and committed to your own well-being.

The most important thing that I want you to remember is this: Don’t delay. Don’t stop. Don’t beat yourself up. It takes three weeks to establish a new habit. Extend yourself some grace when you slip up. Practice a positive mantra meditation to record over the negative self-talk tape that plays in your brain. Stick with me. I promise it will get easier over time. You will get stronger, leaner, and healthier. Give me less time than it takes to watch a sitcom and one month from now… three months from now… six months from now… you will feel and look better than you have in a long time.

XOXO,

-Brooke
