One of the things I’ve been paying more attention to lately is what I’m surrounding my body with. It’s been an enlightening process and absolutely worth the time and effort to explore.
Awareness is power.
I suspect you would be as surprised as I have been about how many convenient daily-use items can be harmful, especially if used, cleaned, or stored incorrectly.
For instance, many of us have used single-use plastic water bottles to help us stay hydrated, but when heated or degraded (including by re-use), they can leach chemicals and microplastics. Re-usable bottles made from stainless steel, food-grade silicone, or glass are safer alternatives for long-term use.
Interestingly, I’ve been a fan of the Yogable cork yoga mats for a while, primarily because of the enhanced grip, wider width option, antimicrobial benefits, and thoughtful designs. And the smell of natural cork is like aromatherapy! I was also aware that they were eco-friendly, sustainable, and biodegradable.
What I hadn’t really considered was the way old-school plastic and rubber versions can be both unhygienic and unhealthy when not cleaned properly or stored in a hot vehicle. I definitely would not recommend putting your bare skin – much less your face – on one!
I recently did a small test with the top three yoga mats and compared them to my Yogable cork mat. The results were pretty revealing and confirmed for me why I’m committed to only using my cork mat.
The big takeaway that I want to share with you is that in addition to being conscientious about the materials we choose, we also have to be diligent about how we use, care for, and store them. It can make a real difference.
