Getting Back After a Life Detour

It seems so easy to break from our fitness routines. Whether it’s an intensive work obligation, a planned family vacation, or even just having the kids home all day during the summer break, self-care is often the first thing we sacrifice in order to accommodate everything else.

It happens to all of us. The important thing is that we remember that taking care of ourselves is what gives us the strength and stamina to take care of everything else.

Instead of feeling bad about life’s inevitable detours, we just need to focus on getting back on track. And the best way to do that is to keep it simple and start small.

Morning meditations are a great way to set yourself up for success. Setting a goal and visualizing it is inspirational and motivational. Perhaps the only thing more powerful than our bodies are our minds, so re-centering our intentions lays a foundation for conscious change.

Then, put yourself on a schedule. Set aside some time for YOU and remember that you can still take care of whatever else you need to do—just before or after your “me time.” Finding a fitness buddy or accountability partner can help ensure you keep your personal commitment.

It’s also important to set realistic goals for taking care of our bodies. Rather than jumping back into hour-long workouts every day, aim for smaller, smarter exercises every other day—like squeezing in a bite-sized burn while cooking!

This will allow you to build up your confidence back up and re-established a routine. Once you have, start a new short program like the Summer SlimDown or 20-da7 Ab Attack Challenge. Instead of trying to go from 0-100, slowly ease your way back into daily self-care. Trying to hit too hard, too fast, is a recipe for hitting a wall and getting discouraged.

Patience is a virtue. Start now. Go Slow. Achieve success.
