Thanks to my friends at Golden Hippo, I’ve recently added a little ritual to my morning routine, and I have a feeling you’ll appreciate it, too. It’s quick and easy… and it gives you a real peek into how your body is doing before the chaos of the day begins.
It’s called The Mirror Test.
Unlike overt signals that your body needs some extra support – like exhaustion, pain, or sickness – it’s often subtle signs that show up first… if we’re paying attention.
Perhaps our skin is looking a little dull… our eyes that appear puffy… or we simply have a vague sense of being “off” that we can’t quite name.
If we recognize these signs early, we can often begin some self-care before burnout, bloat, or brain fog even has a chance to set in. So, before you reach for your coffee mug or your phone starts blowing up, take 60 seconds to check in with the person in the mirror.
Here are 3 quick things that I look for and what to do if something seems a little off.
Mirror Test Check-In
- Eyes – Look yourself right in the eyes.
If the whites of your eyes are bright and clear, you are likely hydrated, rested, and balanced. If they are dull, bloodshot, or yellowish, that may signal dehydration, sleep-deprivation, liver imbalance, or stress.
- Drink 20 oz of water before morning coffee.
- Add lemon or apple cider vinegar to your water for a gentle liver flush
- Skip alcohol and processed foods for 2 days to give your liver a gentle break.
- Prioritize getting at least 7 hours of sleep.
Incorporating these tips can help with clearer eyes, under-eye circles, better focus, and more energy.
- Tongue – Stick out your tongue.
If your tongue is pink with a thin white film, you’re likely experiencing healthy digestion and a strong immune system. If you have thick white buildup, cracks, or discoloration, your gut microbiome may be out of balance or your immune system may be under stress.
- Scrape your tongue daily to reduce oral toxins.
- Cut back on sugar, dairy, and ultra-processed carbs.
- Add a daily probiotic for gut and immune health.
Trying these tips may help you experience less bloating, few unhealthy cravings, smoother digestion, more stable moods, and even clearer skin.
I swear by Foundation Digest. It’s a gentle, everyday probiotic-infused formula that helps support smooth digestion, better nutrient absorption, and a healthy, balanced gut. (Special Discount Here)
- Nails – Check out those nails.
If your nails are smooth, strong, and pinkish in color, you are probably eating a healthy, balanced diet and drinking plenty of water. If they are brittle, pale in color, or have ridges or dents, you may be low in iron, biotin, or B-complex vitamins.
- Add more greens, legumes, and seeds to your diet.
- Consider supplementing with B12, iron, or trace minerals, as needed.
- Drink more water. Nail beds need hydration, too!
- Make time more “me time” to reduce stress and it’s hormonal effects on nail and hair growth.
Embracing these tips can help you start seeing stronger nails, healthier hair, more sustained energy, and fewer “wired but tired” days.
As always, if anything seems unusual or persistent, be sure to check with your doctor. The Mirror Test can give you important clues, but it is not the same thing as a regular checkup.
Give it a try and let me know what you “see” in the mirror!
