Feeding The Mind-Body Connection

I’ve always found it surprising that so many people view the mind and body as separate entities.

This perspective isn’t necessarily as common in some other cultures, but here in the U.S. we tend to split them into distinct disciplines… medicine and psychology. For the most part, we diagnose them separately… and we treat them separately.

But the reality is that the biochemical processes that allow us to absorb oxygen, digest food, and move our muscles are the same ones that support cognition, memory, and mood. And those biochemical processes are specifically driven by the carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals in our diets.

Sometimes the effects of certain foods and mental and physical reactions are obvious – like when we experience a sugar crash. But at other times, the impacts of nutritional elements may be concealed – like the crucial role of Omega-3 fatty acids in wound healing.

But whether we are aware of the connections or not, our mind and body constantly work in tandem and require high-quality fuel to perform optimally.

Our gut microbiome is actually responsible for producing neurotransmitters, like serotonin and gamma‑aminobutyric acid, in our digestive tract that affect anxiety, appetite, learning, sleep, stress, and even sexual desire and function.

The direct relationship between our physical and mental well-being – including the effects of nutrition on all of our bodily processes – supports a holistic approach to wellness. And I’m all for that!
