Self-love vs. Selfishness

It’s mind-blowing to me that we often associate self-love with selfishness. That could not be further from the truth! One online thesaurus I accessed equated it with conceit, narcissism, and vanity. WTF?!? And get this… it suggested “modesty” as the antonym! Who knew self-love was such a contentious topic?

I find this fascinating! We’ve been conditioned to view – and literally label – accepting and appreciating ourselves as selfish. No wonder we struggle actually doing it.

And even when we are able to embrace the concept… because it sounds amazing… it isn’t easy to filter out our self-criticism and judgment. We are constantly in a war of words with ourselves.

That’s why I shared my Self-Reflection Mirror exercise this week. It’s a great way to surround ourselves with positivity, start looking deeper, and shift our perspective from the “image” in our minds to the person in our hearts. I know you’ll discover someone absolutely amazing! (This month I chose a hot pink sharpie to write affirmations and personal reminders about self-love on my dressing mirror.)

Why are we able to see the positive traits in our girlfriends but not in ourselves? Why do we actively try to make our partners feel special but ignore our own needs for validation? Why are we more concerned with how others see us than we are about the opinion of the person looking back at us in the mirror?

It shouldn’t be controversial to love ourselves! The journey to self-love begins with self-care. Remember that. Try giving to yourself in the loving way you give to others. Meet yourself with loving kindness, self-compassion, and personal admiration. You are SO worthy.

As Carrie Bradshaw famously says, “The most exciting, significant, and challenging relationship of all, is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the YOU that you love… well that’s just fabulous.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
