May is officially National Walking Month and I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to get your steps in! Surprisingly, we actually use 200 different muscles when we walk, which counts as an amazing workout to me!
Recently, I’ve been challenging myself to do 10,000‑12,000 steps a day, which equals about 400-500 free calories. A general formula is: 2,000 steps = 75 calories burned. Those free calories mean you can indulge more or sacrifice less while still staying on track with your fitness goals.
Walking 20 to 30 minutes a day has been shown to reduce heart disease (which is super important for women), lower high blood pressure, support weight loss, and improve overall health. It also increases blood flow to the brain which can give us a mood boost! And the adrenaline and dopamine helps improve attention span and focus.
And while all of those health benefits are amazing, in my experience, there is SO much more that makes walking uniquely special.
When I’m by myself, I catch up on my calls – I call it the walk ‘n talk – so I can be twice as productive! When I walk with my besties, I am so grateful for our conversation and camaraderie. And unlike when I’m in my car, on foot I find myself noticing the fragrant flowers, song birds, and beautiful views. Sometimes I get lost in nature’s embrace… the warmth of the sun on my skin… the coolness of the breeze in my hair… and the fresh air that fills my lungs. It’s truly magical.
So put your best foot forward and rack up both good health and free calories. All you need is a water bottle and a comfy pair of shoes. I’m wearing @Skechers for max comfort and support, designed in seasonal colors that make walking fun and fashionable! #SkechersAmbassador
