Home Workouts Are Here to Stay

This year many of us traded in our valued gym time for at-home workouts by necessity. The shift was not easy at first for many of us, but we quickly learned the benefits of exercising at home. Now options are shifting again. Whether or not you decide to return to gyms and your favorite classes, home workouts can continue to be an important part of your fitness routine. Some gyms will open, others may stay closed, but home workouts are here to stay.

Here are just some of the benefits of at-home workouts we can all appreciate:

  1. Whenever you want: Does it get any easier than staying fit without ever having to leave your house? On my app, you have hundreds of workouts at your fingertips. Gone are the days where an over-extended work meeting or your kid’s soccer practice would keep you from attending your favorite HIIT class. Now you can exercise whenever you want.
  1. No Waiting: You’ve probably experienced the frustration of having to wait to use a piece of equipment or getting shut out of your spin class when spots filled up. Well, that’s no longer a problem when your gym is your home. No waiting also means you get to finish your workout a lot quicker.
  1. No Excuses: Exercising at home means you have no excuse to put it off or not do it at all. Bad weather? No commute required. The kids aren’t feeling well? You’re still home if they need you. Need to make dinner? Squeeze in a workout while it’s baking in the oven. You no longer have those excuses that kept you from achieving your fitness goals. Sure, your dog will probably mistake your yoga mat for a dog bed and lick your face while you’re doing sit-ups (like mine always does), but that just adds fun to your fitness challenge.
  1. Split it up: Even at home, you may find it difficult to commit to the full amount of time you would like to exercise. So why not split it up? You can squeeze in a 15-minute yoga video in the morning before the kids wake up and use the late afternoon for a booty burn or total body cardio. You still get your full workout in and you don’t have to sacrifice a large chunk of your day at once. There’s no rule saying that it all has to be done in one shot.
  1. A Family Affair: What better way to spend time with your family than to do something that’s good for all of you? No matter what age your kids are, you can turn fitness into a fun family activity. Try a yoga class or engage in some friendly competition like who can do the most jumping jacks or hold the longest plank. With remote learning, your kids are most likely missing PE and sitting more than usual, making it more important to get them moving (stay tuned for my Mini-PE series). In the process, you’re also setting a good example for your kids about the importance of getting strong and staying healthy with an active lifestyle.
  1. Keep Your Community Safe: Exercising at home minimizes your risk of getting sick, and staying away from crowded places benefits, not just you, but your family and community. Keep up the at-home workouts to stay healthy, boost your immune system, and stay sane in a particularly crazy year.
