As part of my commitment to radical self-love this month, I want to encourage all of you to focus on yourself first. That may sound selfish, but it’s actually a powerful principle that strengthens your core and replenishes your reserves so that you are able to give more to yourself and everyone else.
It’s like the airline safety instruction to put on your own oxygen mask before attempting to assist someone else with theirs. You won’t have the focus, strength, or energy to assist the people around you if you are struggling to breathe. Taking care of yourself literally empowers you to take better care of others.
I call this concept of self-love “crushing on yourself,” because it’s really about extending yourself the same kind of care, compassion, and commitment you so lovingly show romantic partners, family and friends. Think about that. Really think about it.
When someone you love is feeling down, you lift them up. When they need help, you give them support. When they make a mistake, you show them understanding. When they are insecure, you offer them encouragement. You don’t deserve anything less for yourself… from yourself.
Remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical health. And it’s worth investing time and effort in learning to love yourself – as you are! That includes knowing your value, building up your confidence, enjoying your own company, celebrating the experiences that shaped you, and recognizing your heart’s desires.
We’re all on this health and fitness journey together. Let’s make sure all of our hard work is reflected in our minds as well as our mirrors.
XO,
Brooke
